Lomi Lomi is an ancient Hawaiian healing massage.
The objective of the massage is to balance the body, mind, and spirit and return them to Pono (meaning, "how things should be."
Said to have begun over a 1000 years ago when people from Polynesia brought it with them when they relocated to Hawaii, it has ever since developed by being passed down to the land and families.
My Lomi Lomi Kumu (meaning "teacher" in Hawaiian) is Dane Kaohelani Silva, the founder of Long Life Lomilomi, in Hilo, Hawaii. He lives on the Island of Hawai‘i and I have had the privilege to be taught by him personally.
With a doctorate degree in chiropractic and also being certified as
a practitioner in acupuncture and moxibustion,
Dane Kaohelani Silva's Lomi Lomi is based on anatomical physiology and works sufficiently on the muscles to alleviate bodily ills.
More so, this massage that uses not only the palm of the hand but also the elbows induces deep relaxation and is able to heal any energetic stagnation.
It is a rare Kumu Lomi Lomi that has mastered traditional Hawaiian spirituality and left-brained anatomy and pathology.
I am not merely learning the skills of Lomi Lomi from my Kumu; he is also teaching me a lot about ALOHA.
How as human beings we ought to be. Living in harmony with nature and our attitudes toward it. To think about ourselves and others. To feel...
Many challenges exist that cannot be solved in just a few days.
However, I intend to bring to you what has been transmitted to me from
my Kumu, faithfully, while I think about such matters in my daily life.
There is a way of thinking in Hawaii called "Lokahi."
I love this way of thinking.
"Lokahi" is a word that means harmony and balance in Hawaiian.
In Hawaii, it has always been considered that when nature, people,
and god are in a state of “Lokahi,” there was health.
Being in the right balance meant one was not leaning too much on nature,
on people, or on god. By not deviating too much, we may be able to put ourselves in a state where it becomes easier to balance ourselves.
Staying balanced may sometimes be very difficult in our everyday activities,
but I feel that by shifting our awareness a little, we can bring ourselves back to a point very close to that middle.
I also believe that Lomi Lomi has the power to enable that effect.
